The Iowa Democratic Party is preparing for potentially record turnout in the Feb. 3 caucuses, but those participating will still represent only a fraction of the state’s voters. More than a third of registered voters are independents, with the rest roughly evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. Even a record-setting turnout would likely amount to less than half of registered Democrats. (Republicans and independents may also participate in the Democratic caucuses, but they will have to change their party affiliation to do so.)
