The U.S. coronavirus-related death toll neared 100,000 as the country marked the Memorial Day holiday weekend, while India continued to see a surge in infections.

The number of confirmed deaths in the U.S. caused by the new coronavirus surpassed 97,000, the highest national tally globally, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. More than 5.3 million people have been infected world-wide, with over 1.6 million of those cases in the U.S., the data showed.
