On Monday morning, Olivier Plummer steeled himself for his first protest for George Floyd in New York City, after struggling for days between a sense of duty to a growing movement and fear over a deadly pandemic.

Mr. Plummer, a recent college graduate with asthma, had been torn on whether to put his and his family’s health at risk since demonstrations across the city began Thursday. He lives with his parents who both have hypertension, which could also lead to severe complications if they were infected with the new coronavirus.
