Before 2019, this scene would have been difficult to imagine: fans at a major sporting event, many who forked over hundreds of dollars to attend, shouting that the athletes on the field were underpaid.

That actually happened at the Women’s World Cup Final on July 7 in Lyon, France. Supporters of the victorious U.S. women’s soccer team chanted “Equal pay!” It was a message to the U.S. Soccer Federation that they supported the players’ lawsuit for gender discrimination, a charge the federation denies.
