The U.S. approached a milestone on Saturday, nearing Italy as the country with the most deaths from the new coronavirus, as authorities world-wide implored citizens to maintain lockdowns despite the Easter holiday weekend.

Across the U.S., reported cases reached 501,615, with 18,777 total deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. In Italy, where the number of new cases has trended down for many days, the death toll stood at 18,849.
