Boeing Co.’s woes mounted Friday as a long-awaited launch of its space capsule failed to reach the planned orbit and it emerged that the aerospace giant had ordered its biggest supplier to halt work on the 737 MAX.

Those developments and the decision of a top airline customer to take the MAX off its schedule until June capped a week of escalating trouble for Boeing leaders—including Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg—that began with Boeing suspending production of the MAX.
